It is an account of survival, family, and international basketball. A Humble Beginning Born on the 6th of December 1994 in Athens, Greece, Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo was born. At 6 feet 11 inches and weighing approximately 242 pounds, he is the ideal size of the current NBA small forward- capable of bullying his way in the paint, yet one who can handle the basketball like a point guard. His ability to cover a wide area, deftness, and endless effort have been the traits that have made him a most dreaded player in the league. Giannis was born to parents, Charles and Veronica, who were Nigerian immigrants who had migrated to their country to secure a better life. In Greece, the not-so-early years of the Antetokounmpo family were encompassed by poverty. Giannis and his siblings, Thanasis, Kostas, Francis, and Alex, could be found many times selling watches, sunglasses, and CDs in the streets of Athens as a source of extra income to feed the family. His unrelenting spirit was met by these hard initial years. Family & Personal Life Giannis has always been a family-oriented player. His father, Charles, died in 2017, which is the most tragic event that motivated Giannis to remember his father through his performance. His mother, Veronica, continues to be his greatest inspiration, and his brothers have tried their luck in professional basketball, and perhaps Thanasis Antetokounmpo has made it to the Milwaukee Bucks roster, joining him. Early Career & The Draft Giannis never attended a college or high school program in the U.S, just like many NBA players. Rather, his basketball career started in the semipro Filathlitikos club in Athens. The Milwaukee Bucks made this bet and opted to pick the young, lanky forward with the 15th pick of the 2013 NBA Draft. By 2017, Giannis had bloomed as the centerpiece of the Bucks, winning his first All-Star selection. His final achievement was crowning, in 2021, when he led Milwaukee to win its first title in 50 years, scoring 50 points in Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the Phoenix Suns. Such a performance secured him Finals MVP and his legacy in the NBA. Even with injuries, e.g., repeated soreness in the knee, Giannis is a well-conditioned player with a high tolerance level.
